INDIAN WELLS, California. – It was an impressive start for the Mississippi State men’s tennis team at the inaugural Oracle ITA National Fall Championships Wednesday, as it saw two singles players and one doubles team post victories in their opening-round matches.
Second-ranked Bulldog Nuno Borges – the top seed in this week’s event – faced a tough test in his first match against Texas’ Leonardo Telles, having to battle to emerge triumphant. In the first set, Borges battled back from a 3-1 deficit en route to posting a 7-5, 6-1 victory over the Longhorn. Borges will face 42nd-ranked Ryo Matsumura of Kentucky in his Thursday second round battle at 4 p.m. CT.
State’s 67th-ranked Strahinja Rakic also picked up a first-round victory, soundly defeating Gustavus Adolphus’ Mohanad Al Houni 6-1, 6-0. Like his teammate Borges, Rakic advanced to the second round where he will face Tulane’s 13th-ranked and No. 7 seed Constantin Schmitz at 1 p.m. CT.
Bulldog Giovanni Oradini dropped a tough tourney opener to Baylor’s eighth-seeded Johannes Schretter, who is ranked 40th nationally, in a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7) marathon Wednesday. The State lefty is set to face Michigan’s Runhao Hua in Thursday’s first round of consolation beginning at 2:45 p.m. CT.
In doubles, the seventh-ranked MSU tandem of Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey notched a hard-fought 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Gilad Berman and Kevin Konfederak of four-time NAIA national champion Georgia Gwinnett late Wednesday in their first-round action. The State duo will meet Baylor’s second-seeded and 19th-ranked pair of Will Little and Johannes Schretter Thursday in the round of 16.
